Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1½ pounds lean ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Mushroom Onion Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
1. Make the Beef Patties
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then shape into 4 to 6 oval patties.
2. Brown the Patties
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4 minutes per side until nicely browned. Transfer them to a plate.
3. Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened and lightly browned. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
4. Prepare the Gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and thyme. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
5. Finish Cooking
Return the beef patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, cover, and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes until the patties are fully cooked and tender.
6. Serve
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or steamed vegetables.
Expert Tips
Handle the ground beef gently to keep the patties tender. Brown the patties well before simmering to develop deep flavor. Use low-sodium beef broth so you can adjust the seasoning at the end.
Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave with a splash of beef broth. Freeze for up to 3 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, steamed rice, roasted vegetables, green beans, buttered corn, dinner rolls, or a fresh garden salad.
Recipe Variations
Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version, add sautéed bell peppers to the gravy, stir in sour cream for a creamy mushroom sauce, use Swiss mushrooms for extra flavor, or top with melted Swiss cheese before serving.
